ORNAMENTEN VERDEN I FARVER OG MØNSTRE                              22. april – 25. september 2016

Glasmuseet Ebeltoft præsenterer15 internationale glaskunstnere, der alle

arbejder med ornamentik og mønstre. Jeg er så heldig at være en af dem.

 

"Indenfor kunsthåndværket er der stor tradition for dekoration, ornamentik og mønstre. I glaskunsten er teknikkerne udviklet og raffineret gennem århundreder, men i de seneste årtier har glaskunsten i vid udstrækning løsrevet sig fra brugsfunktionen, og traditionerne er i opbrud. Men enkelte kunstnere bibeholder interessen for mønsteret og ornamentikken indenfor en praksis, der både tilgodeser ønsket om kunstnerisk styrke og visuel nydelse, og for nogle bliver dette et omdrejningspunkt i sig selv."

 

Jeg kunn ikke have sagt det bedre....;-). Tidligere, under forberedelserne til katalog og udstilling blev deltagerne bedt om at svare på nogle spørgsmål. Jeg vil dele mine svar med jer, da de belyser mine egne tanker omkring mit arbejde.

 

1. Do you consciously work with ornamentation/decoration/pattern? If yes – how?

Yes, it is a conscious choice. I assemble fragments of glass into larger tapestries of ornamentation.

 

2. Why do you work with ornamentation/decoration/pattern and incorporate it in your work?

I enjoy the repetitive, meditative way of working with patterns. Life is chaotic and unpredictable and my need for structure and a certain sense of control (illusionary) manifests itself in my work. That glass itself is amorphous only makes the job even more challenging.

Though pattern making satisfies my need for structure, it is when the pattern is broken or disturbed that gives the largest reward.

 

3. Where do you gain inspiration?

Life, nature, music, dreams, words….and glass.

 

4. Do you have any thoughts on how ornamentation/decorations/pattern is used in society today?

The following sums it up much better than I can:

As science writer and editor at the journal Nature, Philip Ball points out: “Our brains are attuned to finding regularities in the world and using them to make predictions and deductions.” Pattern is the basis of science, language, culture and “our place in the cosmos”. Music flows in patterns, we build in patterns, our social structures follow patterns. Which is why, he writes, “our brains aren’t just adept at finding order and pattern, but respond to them aesthetically, rewarding ourselves with the pleasure and satisfaction of seeing universal harmonies”.
